A lot of you might have been wondering, what are those ingredients (as per our advertisements) that have to do in a lip cream product? Well, I would say most of them aren’t necessary to produce a functional lip cream. Let’s start with a quick summary of our ingredients:

  1. Manuka Honey
  2. Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil / Argan Oil
  3. Tocopherol Acetate
  4. Diisostearyl Malate
  5. Trimethylsiloxysilicate
  6. Silica Dimethyl Silylate
  7. Titanium Dioxide
  8. Disteardimonium Hectorite
  9. Phenoxyethanol
  10. Ethylhexylglycerin

Manuka Honey

The primary research on honey and skin has to do with its multi-faceted role in soothing various concerns. The primary usage of honey in skincare products is its function as antioxidant properties that help wound healings and other common benefits from honey. Commonly, honey forms a barrier on the skin that helps to soothe and protects the skin area comes in contact with it.

Manuka Honey is a type of honey that used in many skincare products, but the main reason for us adopting Manuka Honey is its benefits in lip care and lip protection. Manuka Honey is produced in New Zealand from bees that pollinate the country’s native manuka shrub. It has more methylglyoxal that adds an advantage to its benefits when compared to different types of honey.

Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil/Argan Oil

It is a non-fragrant plant oil expressed from the kernels of argan trees. Argan oil contains several beneficial lipids and fatty acids for skin, including oleic acid, palmitic acid, and, most importantly, linoleic acid. It is a good source of antioxidant vitamin E (tocopherol) and, like several other plant oils, a source of other antioxidant compounds.

Tocopherol Acetate

It is also known as vitamin E, one of the most well-known and researched antioxidants for the body and the skin. Vitamin E occurs naturally in human skin but it will be depleted due to constant environmental exposure, such as sunlight. It is now widely used in the cosmetics industry because it works extremely well on human lips and skin. We are happy that we made this as part of our ingredients which is a plus point for better lips care.

Diisostearyl Malate

It is an ester that functions as an emollient in cosmetic products. It is created by combining malic acid and isostearyl alcohol. This is the most commonly used ingredient in lipsticks (you should be seeing this in almost every lipstick products in the market) and has been deemed safe for use by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Board at Washington, DC.

We use this as a skin-softening, emollient, and occlusive agent.

Silica Dimethyl Silylate

Silica dimethyl silylate is a common ingredient in cosmetic or personal care products. It is a type of “siloxane polymer”, where the backbone of the molecule is made up of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms. Silicon dioxide is commonly found in many fruits and vegetables naturally. For a consumable product, it is commonly used as an anti-caking agent that prevents things to clump up in ways that they’re not supposed to.

Ingredient quality rating: ★★★★✩ (4/5)

P.S. To be a vegan, food ingredients should not be animal-derived or involves any animal during production. Silicon dioxide is vegan since it is just a mineral found in sand, rocks, and the Earth’s crust. It is not derived from an animal.

Titanium Dioxide

It is an inert earth mineral used as a thickening, lubricating, and sunscreen ingredient in cosmetic products. It protects the skin from UVA and UVB radiation and is considered no risk on sensitive skin. Titanium dioxide is a great sunscreen active for sensitive and redness-prone skin. It is also great ut use around human eyes, as is highly unlikely to cause stinging of the skin. Furthermore, it can be micronized and coated for usage in cosmetics production. The micronizing makes it easier to spread across the skin and provides a cosmetically elegant look and feel. Micronized titanium dioxide is much more stable in my opinion, and it also provides better sun protection than non-micronized titanium dioxide.

Disteardimonium Hectorite

It is a natural clay mineral hectorite that acts as a thickening agent for cosmetic products. Typically, it is widely used in face and skin creams, as well as deodorants, foundations, and lipsticks.

Ingredient quality rating: ★★★★✩ (4/5)

It is a preservative that approved globally for the usage of cosmetic products. It has broad-spectrum activities against the pathogen (a bacterium, virus, or other microorganisms that can cause disease). For products like lipsticks or any other lip products that will lead consumers to reapply and reuse over time, especially when the cap is being opened on and off, The chances of pathogen exposure are high. Preservatives in cosmetic products are necessary for the prevention of pathogen growth, which might cause a variety of sensitivity issues or even infections.

This ingredient is now widely used in cosmetic products. Important note to you, Paraben is not a good ingredient when it comes to skin or health, thus we have rejected the usage of Paraben and make our products paraben-free. This naturally extracted preservative, Phenoxyethanol is our perfect choice of replacement. We are using a low amount of Phenoxyethanol and combined it with other ingredients like Ethylhexylglycerin. By doing so, lower amounts of Phenoxyethanol can be just as effective as the maximum approved amount. Lastly, this preservative is proven to be non-absorbable on consumer skin.

Ingredient quality rating: ★★★★✩ (4/5)

As we have mentioned in Phenoxyethanol section, we are combining Ethylhexylglycerin to minimize the amount of Phenoxyethanol. Ethylhexylglycerin serves as a surfactant and preserving enhancer. It also acts as a safe preservative in minute amounts. It is a proven preservative-enhancer and is commonly used instead of controversial parabens.

Ethylhexylglycerin is a synthetic compound derived from grains and plants, and it works by reducing interfacial tension on the cellular walls of micro-organisms, promoting their rapid destruction and a wider spectrum of activities. Other than that, it also helps to prevent the multiplication of odor and enhancing the efficacy of preservatives such as Phenoxyethanol.

Lastly, it also works as a skin-conditioning agent, where most research found that there is no skin irritation or erythema causes by this preservative booster. This preservative is proven to be non-absorbable on consumer skin.
